Brendan Fraser will not attend the Golden Globes if he is nominated

Brendan Fraser He's enjoying some of the best reviews - and some of the biggest awards - of his career for his work on the upcoming Darren Aronofsky movie Whale. Oddsmakers has him close to earning a Best Actor nomination at the Academy Awards, and many are speculating that he could very well win. An actor in this type of strategic frontrunner usually attends as many pre-Oscars events as possible; Giving gracious acceptance speeches, shaking hands, and promoting their film and business.

But while Fraser would certainly love an Oscar, he's made it clear that he won't be appearing in a single major Oscars introduction: Golden Globe. despite shrouded in scandals Because of its membership and lack of transparency in recent years, The Globes (distributed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association) will return live on NBC this January.

However, Fraser wouldn't be around, even if The Globes nominated him for an award. His objections have less to do with the recent controversies at The Globes, and more to do with his controversy alleged abuse by the group and one of its former members. In 2018, Fraser alleged that the former president of the HFPA, Philip Burke, had molested him at a Globes event in 2003. After his accusations were made public, Fraser said GQ He was interviewed by an "independent investigator" and asked to sign a joint press release with the organization - but Burke (who denied Fraser's allegations) was not disciplined for his alleged actions. (Presumably, the statement would have read "The evidence supports this [Berk’s behavior] It was meant to be taken as a joke, not as a sexual advance."

Fraser refused to sign the statement, and now the organization says it has "not apologized" for the incident. (HFPA said GQ They apologized twice. Burke was only kicked out of the group in 2021 after "sharing an article condemning Black Lives Matter as a 'racist hate movement' in an email to the members. Whether they choose to honor him or not, saying "I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association." The Foreign Press in Hollywood.

"It's because of the history I have with them. And my mother didn't raise a hypocrite. You can call me many things, but not this."

It will be interesting to see who Do Attend the Golden Globes in 2023. In retrospect, the Globes were one of the most attended award shows of the season, behind only the Academy Awards, despite the fact that the group's membership was small and largely anonymous. Whether it's out of solidarity with Brendan Fraser, or because of other controversies in the organization, there are plenty of reasons for the filmmakers and artists to Not to go this year. But that may not stop some (or most) from attending anyway.

Whale It is set to open in theaters on December 9.
