Beware, massive spoilers for the first season of Wednesday's Netflix show await.
Netflix dropped all eight episodes from the first season Wednesday, a series directed by Tim Burton based on Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) of The Addams Family. The strange and spooky world of the Addams Family is rich and long-running, but the new show has expanded it into a world of "outcasts," or people with supernatural connections and powers. They stand in contrast to the "norms", or the ordinary people who populate the town near the boarding school Wednesday, Nevermore Academy.
This season covers Wednesday's first year in Nevermore and a series of mysterious murders in the area. In the final episode, her investigation comes to some harsh conclusions.
It begins with Wednesday confronting Normie's alleged town runner, Tyler Galvin (Hunter Doohan). The young goth with the pigtail has been having visions all season long that show her glimpses of a person's future and all of their dark secrets. When she and Tyler kiss in the previous episode, she sees him as "Hyde", some kind of villain who appears to be based on an idea by Dr. Jekyll and mr. Hyde, a scientist who was a man and a beast.
After discovering that her love interest is most likely the local murderer, Wednesday enlists the help of her friends to kidnap and torture him, but they reject the idea. After ruining Wednesday's plans and expelling her from Nevermore, Tyler gives her a speech about his evil machinations. But it is not In fact The mastermind behind the killing. The question remains: Who is controlling Tyler?
Wednesday visits her insect-loving friend, Eugene, who is in the hospital after being attacked. He reveals that he saw someone in red shoes during his attack, which connects the dots for Wednesday: the perpetrator, Marilyn Thornhill (Christina Ricci). All season long, Mrs. Thornhill was eager for friendship until Wednesday, but it was all a ruse. Her real name is Laurel Gates, and she has been plotting revenge against the Addams family for years.
When Wednesday confronts Thornhill, she learns that the plant-loving teacher has been using her herbal combinations to reveal to him the same Tyler Hyde, after he tells him of his mother's fate as Hyde. Then Tyler reappears, and Thornhill says he would "do anything for her".
Except it's not Tyler.
Throughout the series, Wednesday encounters the head of the school, the Waynes (Gwendolyn Christie), who cares deeply about Nevermore's reputation and the safety of her outcast students. It is also shapeshifting. The fake Tyler turns on Weems, but before the headmistress can do more, she is stabbed with nightshade poison and dies before Wednesday's eyes. The teenager then slaps a shovel on the head.
Thornhill's plan goes further than just torturing Wednesday. She wants to resurrect Joseph Craxton, whose coffin was cursed by his magical ancestor Judy Adams on Wednesday. Craxton was a bigot who hated and feared the Outcasts and plotted to kill them all. Thornhill is totally for this, of course, and she uses Wednesday's blood to open his grave and release him into the world once again.
With Wednesday bleeding, Thornhill brings her big plan into action and Haggard Craxton appears and begins to wreak havoc on Nevermore. Before it's too late, Goody Addams' spirit appears and heals her offspring, before sending her to take Craxton back to his grave.
Wednesday once again faces Tyler Hyde's side in the woods, but her roommate Enid (Emma Myers) finally manages to "wolf out," turning into a werewolf protector for her best friend. Wednesday gets away, managing to stab Crackstone's revived form in the heart with a special sword fragment, killing him.
Thornhill also gets her compensation, and is swarmed by Eugene's bees. It's not entirely clear if she dies, but Wednesday certainly gives her a huge kick to the head, which leads to her being removed from the scene. Wednesday then meets up with the rest of her friends, Bianca (Joy Sunday), Xavier (Percy Haynes White), and Enid - whom she finally embraces after refusing hugs all season.
The story ends on Wednesday, completing her narration on her typewriter, with "The End?" And receives a phone as a gift from Xavier, who competed with Tyler for her affection. (She's a bit of a Luddite.)
While driving away from Nevermore with Lurch and the Thing, Wednesday receives several threatening text messages from an unknown number on her new phone. Wed is very happy with her first chase, and fans might be, too — which means there's another mystery to return to at the prospect of. Season 2.
