We've covered before about the importance of having a pair of binoculars that you can slip into your backpack, of not thinking twice about it, or worrying about every struggle or bump they might take on the road. We loved it Celestron Nature DX Binoculars series, but the cool kids love the Nocs, which is modern and stylish that takes good quality binoculars without breaking the bank, and can take some abuse without squeezing you.
Nocs just released a monocular they call the Zoom Tube, and while I've never used it before and was a bit skeptical at first, I've come to really enjoy this little piece of hardware on the road.
Why a monocular? Well, first of all, it's lighter than binoculars, and smaller in size, so it's much easier to bring a daypack. Weighing less than 8 ounces, it fits in the hand very easily. It's also faster to use if you're bird watching, or trying to track something that's moving. With only one lens to adjust, it's much easier to spot something in the distance, and bring the Zoom Tube into focus than its counterpart.
On my recent trip to Yosemite, I used the Zoom Tube to follow climbers up the summit of El Cap; Having only one lens to focus means I can quickly find it again if I look away for a while.

The zoom tube is an 8x32mm scope, which means it has a 32mm lens aperture, with 8x magnification. This is roughly the same as using a 400mm zoom lens. Inside are Swiss designed Bak4 prisms, laminated to reduce chromatic aberration and increase brightness. The eyepiece is nice and large, so it's easy to spot fast-moving animals, or mark a climbing route with your eye, and instantly bring them into focus with the Zoom Tube.
Nocs is also releasing a lens that turns a zoom tube into a 32x microscope. This will greatly extend your hiking time because you'll stop just about every two feet to examine the grains in the unusual rocks, the wing patterns of a dead dragonfly, or the structure of a leaf. It works great and the kids will love it.
I use mine with The height of the designs capture the clipa device that attaches to a backpack's shoulder strap, which in turn will accept the Zoom Tube, so it's easy to carry right there across your chest for easy access.
