Luhrmann has already said he has enough material for much longer Elvis Director cut, but he said recently Endeavor More on some of the materials he would like to have back. Specifically praised Butter Austin for his performance as Elvis Presley, and the way he threw himself into re-creating Elvis concerts. He also revealed that Butler did "all the numbers" from those parties, not just a few specific moments or shots - and someday he'd like to honor that in some way.
As he says:
It's the directors' association. It's not cut. There's a lot of material totaling four hours, but I'm on the record now to say not today, not tomorrow, but sometime I will [it] ...because Austin threw his full parties. He did all the numbers. Austin just did it and it was an out of body experience watching him perform those full concerts, so one day I'm going to cut those whole concerts together.
Can you imagine an entire Elvis Presley concert performed by Austin Butler? I can think of a precedent for that. This would make a great Blu-ray special feature - if Hollywood studios were still investing in these kinds of elaborate special features.
