Warning: Spoilers for the first two episodes of "Gossip Girl" season 2 below.
"It's faster, meaner, funnier," says Long Time.gossip girl" Fashion designer Eric Daman, before December. 1 premiere of the second season of 2.0. "It has a cat fight and people are running for crowns and... Gangs. It just feels like a fan's dream."
The HBO Max reboot kicks off its sophomore season immediately after an eventful New Year's Eve in the Hudson, but the show's return definitely looks a lot more festive. The dialogue is peppered with quick, fashion-related, gossip-inducing jokes—much to the quips between the scheming Monet (Savannah Lee Smith) and teenage Dr. Luna (Zion Moreno). Listen carefully for the blackmail involved Lou Roachshadow in Diet Prada and Retail Burns in New York City. (Hudson Yards I just can't catch a break, huh?)
After six seasons off the original and one off the 2.0 version, Daman continues to push the "Gossip Girl" cover, taking on Constance Billard and St. Judd shares the aftermath, scandals, entanglements, and yes, personal growth. Ahead, the costume designer discusses costume highlights from episodes one and two, as well as upcoming costume (and plot) teasers.
Overalls Julian Zoya Wannabe
julian (Jordan Alexander(literally in a new place now, since downsizing and moving in with half-sister Zoya)Whitney Beck) and her cash-strapped father, Nick (Jonathan Fernandez). Giving up on her repeated attempts to hook up with snoozing ex Opie (Ellie Brown), Julianne focuses on bettering herself.
"She's more aware, but she's still Julianne Calloway, so it's a little misleading," Daman says.
Of course, the main way influencer Julianne expresses herself is through fashion (and an ill-advised social gimmick). Since the sister is in the habit of doing so, she decides to "emulate" Zoya's unwavering (if not sometimes imperious) commitment to her values by forgoing her simple aesthetics.
"I know it's your thing, but I hope you don't mind augmented says Julianne, proudly wearing her new suits at breakfast. She ends up making her half-brother jealous, as Nick exclaims, "Everything you wear just works, right?"
Zoya's father is right: Julian inevitably pulls off the trend of overalls at school, despite Monet and Luna's smug skepticism.
Daman reconstructed Constance's costume in a "contemporary" silhouette friendly to Julian, with inspiration from Liz Hurleys. Versace dress with safety pins, 1994. Julian put it together [with Versace-referential] kilt pins as buckles and her little short shirt and she Dior Sash says, "It oscillates between two realms of good intentions, but it's a little misleading and doesn't really understand the bigger picture."
Luxury brand lover Julien - via Daman, of course - also makes an effort to upstage and support BIPOC designers through her social platform and influence at the school. As a cherry on top of Zoya's bum bum, Julianne (without self-awareness) wears her "Overly Decorated" misbehaviour Le Valley University jacket Embroidered with: "How Much Can I Get Away And Go To Heaven?"
Julianne Debutante Ball Gown
As Julien tries to stay out of the spotlight, Monet prepares to seize it. Revamp "Gossip Girl" black tie issue in a very public forum: an update to the old debutante ball.
"It's strange that all these young women wear wedding dresses. It's a really strange world that still exists," Daman says.
Went to Andrea Pitter's Pantora Bridal For one of the classic wedding styles from the "Making the Cut" winner "Honor" groupDeep V neck sleeveless dress with oversized bow. I've made six versions of the dress in a period of just four weeks, since the evening ended with a full-on brawl between Julien and Monet (and a bunch of dibs turned on each other).
"That Julianne goes to a young, black designer in Brooklyn is also a good story; she's thoughtful and tries to embrace Zoya's ideology in a way," Daman says.
In support of New York City's apparel district, hard hit by the pandemic, Daman's mermaid dress custom-made by Monet with sourced materials Diana Fabrics. "I had something very specific in mind," he says, adding that he took a color theme from the runways: "I wanted to do an illusion of nude with sequins and have this very impactful turquoise blue."
Julien v. Monet fashion showdown
Luna—aka Constance Billard's resident Samantha Jones—convinces Julien to compete against Monet in "Most Influential Teenager" viewer magazine, perhaps an alternative to New York, since former writer Hunter Harris has joined the "Gossip Girl" writers' room for season two. Harris also makes a cameo as a viewer A (very meta) writer already knows Julien: "You look great. Who are you wearing?" she asks Julian, who replies with, "Theophilio. "
And Julian looks absolutely gorgeous in a color-blocked striped jumpsuit by designer Edvin Thompson."homecoming(For the outdoors scenes, Daman paired it perfectly with a vibrant crocheted back paneled trench coat by Design Mons. * Kiss Chef. *)
"And I am Monet. Dolce." classic’ says Julien’s unwarranted rival, praising him without even reading the room—because a path Monet wore the controversial trademark.

Monet's thirst is conveyed through the lavish crystal dress.
"she Covered "So Julianne is unpretentious, downtown, and high-fashion—again, trying to be attentive," Daman says.
The fashion designer needed to get a few extravagant designer dresses, too, since Monet really sticks to the manufactured conflict and throws herself into a fountain. But, again, Julien prevails.
"Having Theophilio versus Dolce, that's a really smart moment," Daman says.
The softer side of Max
Max (Thomas Doherty), a party-craving pleasure-seeker, finds himself in uncharted waters: now that longtime husband Aki (Evan Mok) and Audrey (Emily Alyn Lind) extend their bond to include him, as he explores and tests his unprotected side feelings.
"[He has] "He looks more gentle and romantic with his clothes," Daman says. "Everything is a little softer and a little more vulnerable."
Max's emotional maturity comes through in his chunky sweaters and tactilely comfortable layers—think Burberry sweaters versus his sharp tailored suits and patterned shirts of yesteryear. "It's like a cocoon," Daman says. “Almost like a security blanket, rather than a coat of arms to a super tailored suit.”
Throuple formatted style
Couples and close friends alike often start dressing up - and so does the official Aki, Audrey, and Max collection.
“They coordinate,” Daman says, noting that he often matched with Blair in the original series (Leighton Meester) with Chuck's (Ed Westwick) pocket square. "It really helped tell a story in certain scenes, when you want their energy to be connected."
Daman points to the scene (above) when the three are trying to announce their threesome with Isha, which, in true "Gossip Girl" fashion, goes awry in a funny way. As composites, Audrey's peach-coloured mini Stella McCartney ensemble with a delicate lace ruffle at the bodice, Aki's gray monochromatic Acne ensemble, Max Lardini's muted brown suit and polished 73 London shirt are all subtly matched—"like a chalky and earthy softness to the colors," he says. a guarantee.
Jumping from one duo to the other (and worrying about being the third wheel to Aki and Max) also affects Audrey's old Hollywood referential style, which Daman describes as "a place between Brigitte Bardot meets Diane Keaton in 'Annie Hall'."
Audrey's day school looks veer toward traditional "menswear-inspired" looks, like a hooded jumper from Saint Laurent, a white T-shirt from Simone Rocha under a cable-knit Princess Polly jacket, and cropped jeans from JW Anderson. Her often strapless nighttime party looks are more skewed "sex bomb evening wear," like the lavish velvet Alexander McQueen dress worn at the "Kiss on the Lips" party (coordinated by Max in McQueen's jacket).
Head tie back
In the 2.0 season 1 premiere, Daman and the franchise effectively ditched Blair Waldorf's iconic headband from the original JJ: "She has headband; Ho,” Monet snorted, overshadowing the then novice Zoya.
"To be honest, there was a lot of pushback from fans around that moment," Daman says. "Now we've flipped that with Monet, specifically, and made her go for the crown and emulate the OG Queen Bee."
To anticipate her hostile takeover of Constance Billard, Monet even dresses like Blair in ensembles with ruffled skirts, lace-trimmed Peter Pan collars, designer neckties, and, of course, headbands—"just a complete echo of Blair's Waldorf," says Daman, who entertained Reunite them Jennifer Behr, financier mrs. Waldorf headwear, but also includes smaller independent designers, like Lele Sadoughi and Deepa Gurnani.
But Daman admits: "Monet is more luxurious and modern than Blair."
