In honor of FIFA 2022 world Cup in Qatar, which kicks off November 4. 20, painting Arrived to Latin Artists who are big fans of fĂștbol ask what the sport means to them. In the second part, we talk to an Ecuadorian pop singer Yohan Vera, self-proclaimed football fanatic and ready to support La SelecciĂłn Ecuador during the tournament. Below, read Vera's book "What FĂștbol Means to Me," as told to painting.
My first memory with football, now that I think about it, was in Guayaquil at my home. I loved playing in my backyard. I have to be honest, I'm not the biggest football fan, but I understand the euphoria it causes and I've experienced it, and I think the feeling is nothing compared to anything else. I remember that at the first World Cup in Ecuador in 2002, I was about six years old, and I remember hearing the whole town shouting “goal” and celebrating. The feeling of seeing an entire country unified does not result from anything else. The country may be facing a bad situation, but this goal changes everything.
I always wanted to make a song for my country and I thought it was very important to bring that patriotic feeling. I feel that being an Ecuadorian artist living abroad, you understand how important and magical your country is. Since I began my career, my country and my knowledge have been very present in everything I do. I worked on "Donde NacĂ" myself - it's a gift I wanted to give my country. This song and the World Cup bring positivity and joy to my country.
Once I finished the song, I wanted to send it to the Ecuadorian Football Federation to see different ways I could promote it. Everyone loved the song but it was too late, at which point I changed the song's chorus to: "They tell me no, I say yes, that's how we are where you were born." I think I owe this spirit of perseverance 100% to my country. I just released the song on social media, and a lot of people in my country started interacting with it and creating content with it, and I felt, at that moment, that I really won.
I admire La Tri, of my team, because they represent my country. I feel that your knowledge is worth more by living abroad. I may not be the biggest soccer fan in the world, but if Trey isn't playing, I'm there.
I am sure that this will be the best World Cup for Ecuador. Winning the entire tournament might seem a long way off, but why not? We have an incredible team. If Ecuador wins the World Cup, that would mean a lot. Go beyond fĂștbol, I think it will change the situation in our country and it will mark a rebirth.
