INXS Michael Hutchins lived up to the rock and roll lifestyle. He dated famous models and pop stars, and stories circulated of his drug and alcohol abuse. According to his friends and bandmates, he found the dark allure of rock star excess irresistible.

During this turbulent period, Hutchence reportedly began treatment for depression. It probably didn't help that INXS were no longer the global superstars they were in the late '80s. They reunited after a hiatus to present a new album in 1997, titled Wasted uselessly elegantly. The band toured overseas, then planned a 20th anniversary trip through Australia for late November and December.
