In 2022, the filmmakers decided it was time to do something personal and semi-autobiographical. Made by James Gray Armageddon timingPresented by Alejandro J Pardo, the false record of a handful of factsand Sam Mendes goes out with him The Empire of Light later this year. But one of the most personal and exciting films of the year comes in the form of Steven Spielberg Fablemans. This is a coming-of-age drama about young Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle), who aspires to become a filmmaker while growing up in a dysfunctional family. Spielberg's first writing credit in over 20 years proves to be an enchanting treat, presenting a semi-autobiographical story in a beautiful way.
I came out on the heels of their success West Side Story Last year, Spielberg and writer Tony Kushner teamed up to tell a story based on Spielberg's adolescence through a fantasy lens. Mitzi (Michelle Williams) and Bert Fabelman (Paul Dano) take their son to the movies to see a movie. The greatest show on earth. In the words of Mitzi, “Movies are dreams you never forget.” From the first time Sammy Fabelman saw a motion picture, he knew he wanted to make movies. He would film small train sets crashing into each other and watch them over and over again.
There is something magical about movies. Using 24 frames per second to tell a story is an art form like no other, and Spielberg is a master of his craft. No one can tell his story but him, and he does an amazing job with a screenplay full of detail and a voice acting complex enough to match. Fablemans Sometimes it's so personal that it feels as though it's trying to balance many aspects of Spielberg's life. Still, the way the film manages to stay coherent and invested in every bit of this coming-of-age story is remarkable, and it's told in signature Spielbergian style.
LaBelle does an excellent job with the character, as does Mateo Zoryon Francis-DeFord playing a younger version of Sammy Fabelman. Williams has a lot of weight to work with, and she's great. Dano is great in a much calmer role than he did earlier this year BatmanSeth Rogen once again proves just how talented he is as an actor when he's not playing a different role than himself in a comedy. This cast works together to create a labor of love that really pops off screen.
Fablemans It does well in its silent moments, using music and visuals rather than dialogue to tell its stories. This story is about the power of film and how Sami uses it all the time. He uses film to create a story and shape the world in a way that speaks to his lens. This multi-layered dramatic story makes effective use of cinematic language, showing the different ways Sammy uses his talent for filmmaking for different purposes. The film's well-written humor and a final shot that will make you smile are helpful in making it all work.
A film about the power and magic of cinema is the perfect film for Spielberg to make at this point in his career. This is a movie that dares to remind you of the first movie you ever saw and then pushes even further to make you think about the movie that made you fall in love with movies. From the director who made many of those movies like JawsAnd the Which. t. extra terrestrialAnd the Indiana JonesAnd the Jurassic Parkand now, FablemansThe story of how he got started is one worth watching.
