Gary Rossingtonthe only remaining original member of the Lynyrd Skynyrdexpressed his gratitude for the southern rock band's enduring popularity.
"It's a tribute band right now, and everyone knows it's not the original band," the guitarist explained. Rolling Stone. “Everyone who comes to visit us is told this during the show, and they probably know it before they get there. But people still hear it live.”
At every Lynyrd Skynyrd concert, the band honors its deceased former members, including those who died in tragedy. Plane crash in 1977.
Rossington, 71, has struggled with his health issues in recent years, including multiple Cardiac procedures. These problems have forced the guitarist to miss many shows, and even at those gigs that he can perform, Rossington will often sit in as part of the group, handing over guitar duties to Damon Johnson.
Rossington admitted going through "many different emotions" as he watched Lynyrd Skynyrd from the side of the stage. “The beat is the same and the songs are the same. It sounded good to me. The band sounds like ours,” he explained. “I look outside and don't see the original band — it's weird. Then I look outside and see my replacement, which is weird. Just hearing the songs without playing them live is very strange.”
Although 101 Strange Things Happened, the guitarist is finally happy that Lynyrd Skynyrd's music still connects with people. "Seeing young people enjoying it makes your heart warm."
This sentiment Rossington believed his former bandmates would share. "I am, Allen [Collins] And see me [Van Zant] This band started with a big dream, and that dream has come true. They'd love it if their music was still being played when they were gone."
announced Lynyrd Skynyrd Farewell trip in 2018, but the pandemic finally delayed those plans. Details about when - or if - Skynyrd will retire from the road remain murky.
"It's probably going to stop in a couple of years, it probably won't," Rossington noted. "I just don't know, because who can predict the future? We'll decide then what's really going to happen."
