“The head of promotions at Geffen Records asked me to write a Top 40 song like a hit Eddie Mooney He was at the time ("I Think I'm in Love"). If I did, he said, he'd take it into the top ten, "The Eddie Money song was the inspiration. It was a very catchy beat. And while it was Hagar's first and only hit single, it came at a time when his profile was higher than ever thanks to his 1982 album, Hampton stands, a platinum outing put Hagar on rock radio with songs like "I'll Fall in Love Again" and "There's Only One Way to Rock". Hager states that he "was more interested in writing more of that kind of AOR rather than Top 40 hits and I still am today." But he was ready for the challenge of jumping to the next commercial level. "Mine ['Your Love ... '] It felt like a hit right away and everyone at Geffen Records felt the same," he recalled. "Having a song at Top 40 radio brings a whole different kind of exposure and fanbase," Hagar explains. All of my career, starting with... Montrose, was always AOR-oriented, not Top 40. I relied on touring and classic fist-in-the-air, singing hard rock anthems that always work in concerts, which was the main thing for me at the time. But once I had a real Top 40 hit... I saw concert attendance increased, record sales increased, and it felt good. But it really didn't change my writing style. I'm still writing album-oriented rock songs today."
Decades later, Hagar notes that "Your Love Drives Me Crazy" is still one of the favorite songs of live fans.
