YMO Co-Founder Yukihiro Takahashi Dies at 70 - Billboard


Legendary Japanese drummer, YMO co-founder and music producer Yukihiro Takahashi has passed away. 11 at 5:59 a.m. JST. He was 70 years old.

According to an announcement from his department, Takahashi was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the summer of 2020, and has been in and out of hospital repeatedly after surgery during rehabilitation.

The leading musician had been recuperating at home since November, but at the end of the year his condition deteriorated and he died of aspiration pneumonia associated with his brain disease.

Takahashi was born in Tokyo in 1952. He began his career as a studio musician in high school and, after playing in the sadistic mecha band, founded the Yellow Magic Orchestra in 1978 with co-founders Haruomi Hosono and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

As a solo artist he has released 23 original albums from Sarawa! in 1978 to Life Anew in 2013. Besides his solo career, he has also played in The Beatniks with Keiichi Suzuki, Sketch Show with Hosono, and pupa with Tomoyo Harada and Hiroshi Takano, among others. He was also known as a fashion designer.

A special concert to celebrate Takahashi's 50th anniversary in music was held in September last year, and while the famous singer-songwriter was scheduled to perform, he was unable to do so due to his illness.
