Of course, suburbia isn't immediately the "happily ever after" of their dreams. Although they've moved into a pretty, pink, two-story home complete with a castle-like spire that many would consider dream home goals, the "fixer upper" is underrated by just about everyone, from Morgan to the PTA queen bee from Monroeville, Malvina. Monroe (Maya Rudolph) and even the King and Queen of Andalusia (James Marsden And the Idina Menzelreprise their roles). The script (which features four credited writers) doesn't really explore their adjusting period, though it does give Gisele and Morgan plenty of time to bicker.
As a teenager, Morgan had no time for Giselle or the magical memories of her childhood. Giselle laments that she doesn't "sing the right song anymore." After a quarrel with Morgan ends with Giselle angrily telling her that she is only her "stepmother", Giselle desperately makes a wish on a magic wishing wand (a housewarming gift from Andalusia) for them to live a "life of fantasy". The song here is wonderfully bittersweet, with Adams bringing a tinge of melancholy to her bright voice.
But stepmothers are always evil in fairy tales, so this desire naturally becomes a curse, slowly turning the town into Monrolesia (obviously inspired by Belle's Village from "Beauty and the Beast") and Giselle's kindness into evil. When Morgan catches a fairytale-cracking veneer, she discovers she has until the last stroke in the middle of the night to undo it all.
While the script is heavy on action, it's incredibly light on any kind of real characterization. Malvina is a suburban queen bee, with Rudolph responding by playing her as a less fulfilled character than Evil Maya Rudolph. Enjoying Giselle's proportions, Adams changes her sweet color into a deep, venomous tongue. The two get some confrontations, and one fast-moving duet titled "Badder," but the tension can hardly match what Adams has created. Susan SarandonToo bad in the first movie.
