How to Spend the Perfect Weekend in New Orleans (+ FREE Itinerary)

Day 1: Tourist Attractions

As much as seasoned travelers like to say they want to Travel like a localMost tourist attractions exist for a reason. On the first day we like to get as many touristy things off as possible so we have more flexibility to get around later in the trip. I know this is a big list for a first day, but many of them are close together and stop quickly.

1. New Orleans School of Cooking Classes

While I wouldn't lump this in with all the typical tourist attractions, doing this first will give you a greater appreciation for everything else you eat and do on your trip.

Oh, did we mention you got Bottomless drinks? They had wine, beer, mimosas, and bloody marys. It was a fun way to start the day but a little dangerous for us (me!) with little to no restraint.

This was our first cooking class, and the instructor taught us new cooking skills and gave us great insight into the Cajun/Creole culture and history. You can also ask them for all the food details.

We had the opportunity to prepare popular local dishes such as seafood and okra gumbo, lobster pie and banana crepes. At the end of the class, you can keep the recipes and aprons you cook in as keepsakes.

If you don't have time to take a hands-on cooking class, there are demonstration classes where you can watch the chefs cook and then eat what they bring.

pro type: You can watch them make fresh chocolate fudge at the front of the store, and they hand out samples. We picked some boxes as souvenirs for friends! You don't need a class for those.

Alternatives: If you don't have time for a cooking class, have lunch at Beach. We especially loved the fried bread and spicy ground shrimp + noodle.
