To ceviche and beyond: get the real taste of Peru


It's your first night in Lima. You're all checked into the Kokopelli Hotel in bohemian Barranco - easily one of the coolest areas in town. The Chief Experience Officer (CEO) has just taken you and your colleague along Romes By the jam-packed itinerary you're about to take in the next 11 days. You'll race dune buggies and sandboard in Huacachina, sail to Ballestas AKA Lima's Little Galápagos Islands, explore ancient Inca temples and the incredible scenery of Machu Picchu! But first, it's time to eat. Let me take you through some of my most memorable food and beverage experiences Roamies Total Peru Pack: Cities, Deserts and Inca Ruins venture.

Get comfortable at Isolina on your first night in Barranco

Barranco is full of great bars and restaurants so it's hard to go wrong. I highly recommend checking out Isolina as our CEO Nilo Revilla took us to our first meal together. It is a cozy tavern style restaurant serving old Peruvian dishes. We indulge in a feast of classic comfort foods including potatoes and corn with cheese sauce called Huanquinaand pork with noodles and a roast beef dish that melted in your mouth. Isolina is a must if you want a real taste of traditional Peruvian cuisine.

Tuck into Paracas' famous fish ceviche

On the second day, we arrived in Paracas, a few hours drive from Lima, to have a delicious lunch together near the beach. I went for the ceviche, of course, because I don't think you're allowed to visit Peru without trying it. I followed that up with delicious fried sea bass and plantains. We also had to roast the flight with a Pisco Sour, that was a MUST! Pisco is a popular Peruvian spirit and is delicious in cocktails.

It wasn't long before we were racing around the desert in Paracas on a dune buggy on our way to Laguna Costa Rica. Our group decided it would be wrong not to take the opportunity to say we swam in the desert so we took a quick dip in the warm lagoon, followed by a glass of champagne before watching the sunset. Not a bad way to spend a Thursday evening!

See how Pisco is made in Ica

A short drive from the desert oasis of Huacachina is the birthplace of the Pisco brandy, Ica City. Before spending an afternoon on the mighty sand dunes surrounding Huacachina, our group taste-tested at several craft wineries and pisco distilleries.

We learned the special methods of making Peru's signature drink made from grapes fermented for 15 days, then bottled and ready to drink six months later. The distilleries have plenty of pisco to go around and group participation is actively encouraged in some of the traditional dances on offer.

Work up an appetite for the guinea pigs in the Sacred Valley

Now look, we all had a pet named Rosie when she was a kid, right? Well, with that in mind, it may be necessary to repress fond childhood memories as a guinea pig or presser It is a Peruvian delicacy that is really tasty.

On the seventh day, we arrived at the beautiful village of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley. A good feed was needed after hiking to one of my favorite sights, Perolniyoc Waterfall, and learning about Inca rituals at Killarumiyuq, a moon temple sacred to the Incas.

Apu Veronica Restaurant is known for its delicious portions and great Peruvian cuisine. According to CEO Nilo, this was the place to order presser and alpaca steak. All I can say is that both the alpaca and the guinea pig are as adorable as they are delicious. Try them!

Stop off for empanadas on a trip to Mandore Waterfall

If you haven't opted for the one-day Inca Trail Hike to the Sun Gate viewpoint in Machu Picchu, there are still plenty of great walks around the town of Aquas Calientes. my colleague Romes And I hiked from the city to the stunning Mandore waterfall. You follow train tracks before entering a rainforest filled with orchids, fruit trees, exotic birds, and finally the sight and sounds of rushing water.

On your way there you will pass Victor's Quinoa empanada. A little unassuming on the outside, but trust me, you will have the best empanadas of your life here. Thanks to our CEO Nilo (on the right below), we stopped and indulged in beef, chicken, vegetables, fresh mango juice, and coconut treats for dessert.

Cheers to the adventure in Cusco's Plaza de Armas

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. We shared some amazing experiences together including choosing to use our last full day to reach the top of Rainbow Mountain at 5,200 meters / 17,060 feet above sea level. It was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to and reason enough to celebrate a farewell meal together in Cusco.

Cusco is really something else and a perfect place to end your tour, especially if you plan to continue your Peruvian adventures elsewhere. It is a backpacker's haven. We headed to Hanz Craft Beer for a taste of flights, delicious food, and an amazing view of Plaza de Armas to say the least Solidity For an unforgettable adventure.
