Not only does this reduce your carbon footprint (very important when selecting multiple countries) but it also gives you more Feel to a destination. Driving from one place to another, crossing borders on Earth, sleeping in train cars, seeing landscapes change as you take an epic journey, they all hook us into a slower, much older adventure style.
"After such a long time that they've been confined to our cities, it's not surprising that people are eager to start traveling again," says Erica Kritikides of Intrepid. “But there has been a fundamental shift. With borders open again and cross-border travel easier, we no longer take travel for granted – it just isn't for granted. Because of this, I think many of us are willing to consider taking longer trips away from the office and the daily grind. .
Can't choose between Spain, Portugal and Morocco? No need for that. We've built a huge 24-day trip that covers them all. Starting in Madrid, our itinerary heads west into Portugal, reaches Coimbra and Lisbon, then swings south to the stunning beaches of the Algarve. A hop over the Strait of Gibraltar, and we're in Morocco, with stops in the blue-chip city of Chefchaouen, medieval Fez, windswept Essaouira and a remote desert camp among the dunes of Erg Chigaga. For fans of Moorish history, or fine food, culture, and North African hospitality in general, this is the ultimate long haul. You'll travel from modern art galleries in Madrid to wine bars in Lisbon and a Berber family stay in the High Atlas Mountains - all on a mix of public and private transport.
First-time visitors to Southeast Asia often find it difficult to choose between Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. Each destination offers a slightly different mix of history, food, and scenery, which is why we've crafted a 30-day combo trip, from Bangkok to Luang Prabang, to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and finally Phnom Penh. It's actually a mix of some of Intrepid's best-selling and most popular rides—we just rounded them up back-to-back. Many travelers choose to continue their journey this way, so there's a good chance your new friends will follow you on the tour from country to country. You'll see it all on this adventure: the jungles of Chiang Mai, the UNESCO-listed Ha Long Bay, epic overnight train trips, the enchanting countryside of Battambang and the towering spiers of Angkor Wat.
Plenty of travelers have climbed to the highlights of the north, such as Copenhagen, Oslo, and Stockholm, but not many have been able to combine these with the cobblestone towers and cobbled lanes of Tallinn, or the baroque flair and Soviet history of Vilnius. On this long trip we wanted to mix the best of Scandinavia with the best of the Baltic countries: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Traveling mostly via train and ferry, you'll travel from Denmark, up through Norway to the fjord lands, then on to the Swedish Lake District and Stockholm, before hopping on to Helsinki, Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius, with stops in stunning area. Aukstaitija National Park along the way. It's a proper, ancient, nautical, nautical adventure that takes 32 days and covers five countries and dozens of major cities. Just remember to pack warm.
Like Europe, Africa lends itself well to long journeys: there are dozens of small countries, relatively easy to reach, and the landscape varies greatly from place to place. This itinerary is a wilderness adventure, which means you'll travel through South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe in a purpose-built wilderness truck, staying in a mix of guesthouses and lodges and up to two nights on a houseboat on the Okavango Delta. What's nice about this itinerary is the change of pace: You'll start with the coast, in Cape Town, but soon you'll be surrounded by the epic sand dunes of Sossusvlei, or the red rocks of Fish River Canyon. There are car trips, canoe trips and sunset cruises along the Chobe River. It's all the highlights of South Africa, combined into one 22-day itinerary.
This excursion is one of our most popular long distance excursions, and it is truly unique. Not only can you trek through the mysterious rainforests of Uganda in search of mountain gorillas, but there are also game drives in Lake Nakuru National Park, safaris through the Serengeti, a visit to the Ngorongoro Crater, and a few nights camping in the Maasai Mara reserves. Gorilla trekking passes are included, and you'll travel by wilderness bus, 4x4 safari vehicle, and ferry, with no domestic flights. It all wraps up on the white beaches of northern Zanzibar, with two days of leisurely snorkeling in the archipelago (all this animal-spotting is hard work). It would be hard to cram more African highlights into a single itinerary, though, if you are I feel really adventurous...
