We moved to a new home this year! It still feels very new, and many small projects are yet to be completed (which I'm sure anyone who's moved in recently understands).
But since moving into our new home, I've been working to add little touches to make it feel more at home and to celebrate this small milestone for our family.
We recently took some family photos at our home, which were special. And most years, I make some sort of DIY Christmas tree ornament, so this year I thought I'd make a new home ornament with which to remember this special year.
I'll be sharing exactly how I made my new DIY home decor as well as lots of ideas for customizing this basic idea in different ways.
This is a fun decoration to make for yourself if you've just moved house, but it might also make a great housewarming gift idea.
This DIY decoration can be summed up in two parts: home key + decorations = new home decoration. It's simple but really fun. This is what I used to create.

How to make new home decorations:
- Add gold leaf to the house key. You can do this by using a brush to coat the key with glue. Let it get sticky, then wrap the key in gold foil. Use a second brush to get rid of any excess.
- You may need to go over certain areas of the key again, as the gold leaf can be quite crusty.
- Make a bow out of pipe cleaner or small ribbon.
- Use the yarn to tie on the key and bend into the mini wreath, leaving a loop at the top for hanging from the Christmas tree.
Customization methods:
- Personalize the key - Instead of covering it in gold foil, other options can include painting the key, covering it in glitter, or wrapping it in tissue paper or wrapping paper (as if you were foliating the key).
- CUSTOMIZE YOUR MINI WRAP - You can add tiny pom poms, glitter, confetti, or faux green leaves to the base of your mini wreath to create any look you want.
- Instead of a small wreath - you may choose to add your decorated house key to another object such as small house or others Base decoration. You can draw this like the new house or add the year or house number.

Can I use the house key after painting/painting/adding gloss?
number. You don't want to use this key after adding items like this to it. It is possible that the gold leaf, plating, or glitter inside the lock will come off and cause problems. Once you change the key, it becomes completely decorative.
Is it safe to use a physical house key?
Since this key will stay inside your home longer than the key you are likely to carry around with you, yes. However, if it bothers you to use your actual house key for a project like this, you can use a random key or even the shape of an old key or key for a similar decorative effect.
While I chose to keep my new DIY home decor very simple, you can completely change up this basic idea in a number of ways to fit your aesthetic or create a housewarming gift for a friend.
