G Adventures is getting into the sustainable travel technology space with an investment in Reforest

New release
November 22, 2022

With climate change high on the global news agenda, G Adventures, a community-based tourism leader and adventure travel specialist, has made a significant financial investment in the creation of restorative travel technology company Reforest, to start taking action by planting trees.

Headquartered in Brisbane, Australia, Reforest is a digital platform that connects travelers with local communities that are actively restoring their ecosystems using reforestation. This allows travelers to give back by planting their own trees in places where community tourism relies heavily on local environmental conservation. The platform will provide travelers with concrete and visual scientific data that will measure the positive impact of trees planted on their behalf.

Reforest is also designed to help travel companies looking to address environmental challenges with emissions removal to understand their carbon footprint, then connect it to local projects to support reforestation efforts. The platform is innovative in the way it transforms the hard science of climate action into simple yet compelling personal interactive experiences for corporate clients, who can then go on to plant trees themselves.

Bruce Poon Tip, founder of G Adventures, says travelers are increasingly looking to ensure their trips have a meaningful impact and that planting trees is an effective way to reverse climate change and support community tourism, a concept Poon Tip pioneered more than 30 years ago.

“Preserving local environments is critical to supporting community tourism because it helps improve air and water quality for local people, and supports habitats for wildlife. Travelers want to see natural beauty, so we need the most beautiful places in the world to be around for as long as possible, and that We stay as clean as possible. The Reforest platform will help us achieve this goal and help fight climate change, as planting trees is one of the easiest ways to help reduce emissions.

“I've never been a fan of carbon offsets. The idea that you can have a negative effect in one place and do something positive in another, and that this somehow balances the scale, is not science to me, and most of all it doesn't change people's behaviour. Reforest provides a solution that has real benefits for the places tourism touches, delivering results in a way that travelers can see the positive change they're making. I'm also excited that we can expand our reach and impact by providing this service to more travel companies," says Bon Tip.

Reforest co-founder Daniel Walsh says the G Adventures stake gives the company the means to improve its technology, and expand its offering by commercializing the platform more widely within the global travel industry.

“At Reforest we lead the way in converting hard climate data, for example kg of CO2, into visible and understandable metrics such as ‘trees planted’. The customer can see which trees the travel company is planting on their behalf and track the cumulative impact of their trip as a result. We implement snapshots Drone-based and satellite imagery to give tangible visualization to restoration projects, delivering strong customizable impact.

“Having G Adventures as an investor provides us with the financing we need to bring our innovative new platform to market. Together we will also create a showcase for restorative tourism in action as we build G Adventures' tree planting program together over the coming months.

“The opportunity to support the transformation of this industry to become innovative is compelling to me in terms of the positive impact we can facilitate and the meaningful business models we can help build as we do so,” says Walsh.
