Picture this: It's Thanksgiving, and you're sitting at the table with people from different generations — little grandparents, parents, teens, and toddlers. People ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! take a bite. The conversation pauses. What now?
Large group meals can sometimes end up feeling like small talk at the lowest common denominator—"Annika, what's in those Brussels sprouts?" "Nana, how was the traffic?" So how do you kick things up a notch? This may sound stupid or a third-grade teacher, but we've done it in dozens of dinners and I promise it's really fun:
Ask a question to the groupand walked around the table sharing everyone's answers. [Ed. note: People have the option to pass for any reason!] The question can always be what people are grateful for, but here are some more ideas if you want to shake things up:
What is the worst/strangest job you have ever had?
If you could live anywhere for a year, where would you live and why?
What is one of your most embarrassing teenage memories?
What natural talents do you wish you had? (Would be mine singing!)
What's the best meal you've ever had?
- Which one is yours? Irrational fear?
- What's the best live performance you've ever seen?
- everybody Best three movies
Share something good about the person sitting to your left (How cool is that? Jenny I thought of it as a soccer team-building exercise)
And remember these Dinner conversation napkins by the artist Tucker Nichols? His suggested topics made me laugh, including “What I Know About Cheese,” “Mosquitoes Do/Don’t Bite Me,” “The Food You Used to Love,” and “For the Last Time How Daylight Saving Time Works.”
He has also designed wipes for What Not to Talk About, such as "Mild Flight Delay", "What Everyone Keeps in the Cloud", "The Longest Fingernails in the World", and "Someone in Here Wears Cologne".
