The best moisturizing ingredients to look out for
According to Vargas, you'll want to keep an eye on "masks that contain hyaluronic acid or oils like avocado oil. Avocado oil is a must because it's rich in B vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids that keep skin moisturized from the inside out. Extremely dry skin does well with a mask." Made with ceramides.
Renteln recommends hydrogel or bio-cellulose masks. "Unlike traditional sheet masks, this form can contain more hydrating ingredients and allow those ingredients to better penetrate the skin." Bonus: It's also convenient for travel.
- Ceramides, oils and fatty acids. Improving the skin barrier, smoothing and softening the skin.
- Hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate. Retains moisture, increases hydration and improves skin radiance.
Renteln also suggests calming ingredients like:
- oatmeal
- arnica
- chamomile
- Green tea
- Cucumber
- Centella asiatica
- Allantoin
How often should moisturizing face masks be used?
The golden rule of skin care applies: listen to your skin. Dry skin types may need to use a moisturizing face mask more regularly. You can also reach for them more in the fall or winter to reduce flaky skin.
"You can really target your skin when you need it," says Vargas. "I use a sheet mask every night I exfoliate." Moisturizing after exfoliation is a solid skincare habit to develop as it helps replenish the moisture barrier.
Do moisturizing face masks work on all skin types?
Moisturizing masks can be beneficial for just about everyone. But depending on what your skin needs, they may be better suited to other masks or treatments. "If you have acne, I would focus more on a clay mask rather than moisturizing," says Vargas.
If you have active escapes, be careful. "Those with active acne, perioral dermatitis, or a flare-up of a chronic condition like rosacea or psoriasis should wait until their condition is under control before using a hydrating mask," advises Renteln.
How to use a moisturizing face mask
Step 1: Deeply cleanse your skin.
"Moisturizing masks can be clogging, trapping bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells," says Rentlin. “This can lead to the formation of milia or acne. This can also irritate sensitive skin.” To avoid triggering breakouts, make sure your cloth is clear before applying the mask.
Step 2: Exfoliate
"Peel first to prep the skin before masking," advises Vargas. Exfoliation also allows your skin to absorb more moisture and remove dead skin cells to avoid trapping excess sebum and bacteria. Skip this step if you have more sensitive skin or if you are using moisturizing masks to replenish your skin barrier.
Step 3: Put on the mask - but not for long!
Be careful, you don't leave your mask on for too long, Renteln says. And as fun and satisfying as wearing them, you don't want to use them too much either (doing so can wreak havoc on your skin!). Leaving the mask on for too long runs the risk of clogging your pores or triggering pimples. Word to the wise: less is more.
Discover the best moisturizing face masks
Although some of these skin care steps may seem strange, hydrating face masks are not one of them. "Moisturizing masks can be a beneficial addition to a solid skincare regimen," says Renteln. "It's especially effective for dry and mature skin, during fall/winter weather (when conditions are cold, windy, and dry), or when combating dry environments like airplanes."
