What is body butter?
Body butter is the best balm for dry skin. Full of vitamins A and E and omega-3 fatty acids, body butter helps rejuvenate skin elasticity To fight premature aging. All of these nourishing vitamins and fatty acids keep skin cell membranes healthy to lock in moisture and create a protective barrier around the layers of your skin.
But is body butter suitable for everyone? Body Butter's thick, locked-in formula deeply nourishes your skin - but can it clog your pores? Some people shy away from using body butter for fear of too much of a good thing. To get to the bottom of it, I spoke to an expert who also happens to be the founder of my favorite body butter brands. Naa-Sakle Akuete, CEO and Founder Eugenia Shia family-founded brand dedicated to empowering women through the sale of Raw Shea Butter.

The difference between body butter and body cream
Body lotions, butters, and creams, oh my! But how do you tell the difference — and how do you choose which one to use?
"The body butter has a concentrated, balm-like texture that moisturizes deeply and is used primarily on targeted areas of concern," says Aquite. "The cream has a lotion-like consistency and spreads easily on the skin."
The best ingredient to look out for
According to Akuete, "You want non-comedogenic ingredients (like shea butter), and inside shea butter, you'll want unrefined (the refining process strips shea of its natural color, aroma, and often vitamins)."
Other nourishing ingredients to look for include:
- jojoba butter
- Cupuaçu butter
- Cocoa Butter
- Coconut Oil
- Organic oil
- honey
- Phytosterols (a type of vegetable oil)
Ingredients to avoid
"Look out for ingredients that can clog your pores and ingredients that may have negative effects on your system," Akuit says. Ingredients to stay away from include:
- Perfume + perfume
- Paraben
- phthalates
- Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA)
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS)
Who should use body butter?
If you are new to this area of body care, fear not! Instead, enjoy the transformation your skin will likely undergo when you incorporate a lush blend of natural butters and oils into your skincare routine. Whether you are starting from scratch or looking for a better butter for your skin, there is always room for one in your routine.
"Body butter can be used by everyone," says Aquite. “Especially those with severe skin issues like eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. Even people with oily skin and acne can benefit from using body butter, as long as the products don't clog pores.”
When should you use body butter in your routine?
Body butter locks in moisture, so it's best to use it right after a shower—Or a long soak in the shower. You can also use it on any particularly dry areas when they need some love. Think elbows, hands, knees and heels.
