NEW YORK (AP) -- Maxi Jazz, DJ and singer counters eclectic Brits dance Space saver kafir Known for such hits as "Insomnia" and "We Come 1," is dead. He was 65 years old.
Faithless announced his death on social media Saturday, saying he "died peacefully in his sleep last night."
"He was a man who changed our lives in so many ways. He gave meaning and appropriate message to our music. He was a likable human being with time for all and a wisdom that was profound and accessible," the band's statement read.
No additional details were immediately available about his death.
Born Maxwell Fraser in London, Maxi Jazz burst onto the British club scene in the 1980s as a DJ on pirate radio and founder of Soul Food Cafe System. He later formed Faithless alongside producer and instrumentalist DJ Rollo Armstrong, keyboardist DJ Sister Bliss, and singer-songwriter Jimmy Cotto. They drew on such a wide range of influences that their record label described their debut album "Reverence", released in 1996, as "folk-house-hip-hop-blues-atmosphere-jazz-rap for the dance floor and couch".
Veneration did not spread at first, but eventually gained a large following; The band went on to become a global celebrity with their dynamic stage performances and albums including "Outrospective" and the hit compilation "Forever Faithless".
Faithless broke up in 2011, but recently reunited with Don Jazz, who have since formed Maxi Jazz & The E-Type Boys.
