Thorogood played his first gig with longtime support from The Destroyers on 3 December. 1, 1973. Drummer Jeff Simon, the group's only other remaining founding member, recalled quickly overcoming initial audience disinterest with a group featuring such future classics as "Madison Blues" and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer."
"It was as if someone had flipped a switch," he recalled in a press release. And by the second set, the dance floor was packed. “After the party,” Thorogood added. "Jeff and I thought, 'Maybe we're on to something.'"
Ace Thorogood UCR said In 2022, it was also Simon who helped change the group's direction in an important way. "I was a little bit serious," he recalled. "Jeff was trying to lighten me up a bit, saying, 'You know, George, there's only one Taj Mahal. There's only one John Hammond'." Jeff said, 'Be George. Be who you are.
