In a recent appearance on under scum On the podcast, Mazurkiewicz — who co-founded the band in 1988 — discussed Cannibal Corpse's decision to swap original singer Barnes with Corpsegrinder in 1995.

The early era, the "Barnes era," is what I think everyone calls it, was the beginning of the band. Obviously, that's what we started and how we got started and everything. And we were doing well. We're in peace here. We are moving. We are a force to be reckoned with now. So for a singer to be changed in the middle of that sounds a little crazy, but it had to happen. You look back now, and we all clearly feel like we've improved the band; George is just a better singer overall. And we have moved forward.
Mazurkiewicz clearly understands why Cannibal Corpse fans are so passionate about which player they prefer, too. “But of course both eras mean something,” he said, adding:
This is the beginning of the band, so you'll get these purists who are going, "I like that era more because..." Well - whatever. I don't have a problem with that. it is what it is. [Chris] He was part of the band and we did a good job; It wasn't like there was nothing or nothing going on at the time. . . . It was a big thing to deal with and fortunately we were able to persevere and get through that and be bigger than ever.
I think it will always be moot. . . . [Chris is] Part of the history of cannibals, and any member who was in the band. If it hadn't been for him, I think, the original five members, well, the band would never have existed. So, it was an important and unforgivable era and significance of the original band and the beginnings of the Cannibal Corpse.
