It brings together its annual tribute to the celebrities we lost in the past calendar year via the iconic Beatles icon Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Squad The cover is always a fraught prospect by British artist Chris Parker. Over the past few years as December rolls around and he feels the pressure to blow out this year's model, Parker worries about whether he can do it, who to include/exclude and whether the whole thing is a good idea.
"I've been doing this since 2016," says Parker. "It was the year that anyone who was nice, kind, creative, or special decided it was time to leave before the bad things started." painting On an exclusive note about the year we lost Prince and David Bowie, among many others. Or at least that's how I felt at the time. I've gotten less sensitive to it over the years. I mean, I still try to maintain a star's dignity and think about loved ones and how it would make them feel to see her, but — let's face it — I take notes throughout the year. That explains the inspiration behind his 2022 portrait, which features a whopping 151 faces, including the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, who sits front and center next to, and just below, a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. fat- Olivia Newton-John, flanked by Ray Liotta and Harry Potter actor Robbie "Hagrid" Coltrane.
Also added at the last minute was Fleetwood Mac singer-songwriter Christine McPhee, who passed away this week, as well as a host of other music stars, including "Bat Out of Hell" singer Meat Loaf, Migos Take Off, Aaron Carter, Irene Cara, Loretta Lynn, Coolio, Mark Lanegan, The Screaming Trees, Stone The Godfather, Jerry Lee Lewis, Mimi Parker, Dr. Guitarist Wilco Johnson, The Wanted's Tom Parker, Composer Vangelis, The Ronettes' Ronnie Spector, Mysterious singer Q Lazzarus, Yes drummer Alan White, Famous rock member Cynthia Plaster Caster.
“But this year, I had to put them all side by side for some reason (someone asked me to do it or something) and it really shocked me how many great people we've lost forever. It's a true sea of amazing talent laid out before your eyes,” he says. Parker on the long list of musicians, actors, and comedians who have shed a little bit of light in the darkness. Parker, now an expert in such matters, says he noted as early as 2022 that it would be an "extraordinary year" of bold losses, as his list was so long that by the middle of the year he had already surpassed the final total from one year.
“It was enough to make me think that maybe it's not the right thing to do anymore. But people really love it and have grown to expect it,” he says. “I've been confusing the characters a lot, but I think the front four are valid. Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek) her career was groundbreaking, Meat Loaf was iconic, Robbie Coltrane was heartbreaking, and Olivia Newton-John defined an era. There are plenty of others on the list who are also suffering huge losses and huge icons, but I'm content with my decision here. You made life difficult by going too early. I know that in previous years I had to do late releases and updates, but this year it will be a really tough job as there aren't any gaps."
The list, as usual, is a mix of predominantly American and British superstars from stage, screen, music, comedy and politics, including actors Sidney Poitier, Angela Lansbury, James Caan, Paul Sorvino, Julie Cruz, Anne Heche, William Hurt, Yvette Mimieux and Bob Saget and Leslie Jordan, as well as a mix of sports and fashion directors and personalities.
"Every year I ask that if people like the montage, they can consider donating to charity," he says. “This year, please consider donating to a charity to help the children and people of Ukraine. This should not happen in the 21st century.”
