"The Last of Us" will adapt the games story, then end

Theoretically, a TV show version could spend several seasons adapting just one game before moving on to the sequel — or it could take the games as a springboard to tell an entirely different (and possibly open) story in a world ravaged by a zombie plague.

But that's not HBO's plan The last of usaccording to her book. If the show proves popular enough to merit additional seasons, they will cover the story from The last of us part two.

This game is broad enough that the TV version may require more than one season to adapt it all. And then ... it will probably be so. Mazin said the show is designed to be "limited" and not launch a continuing story of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) wandering a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Basically, according to Mazen, they are doing a TV game show. And once they tell that story, the show will end. As he says:

...the story that remains [after Season 1], which continues the work Naughty Dog did in the second game, Plenty. How much story remains will likely take us more than a season to tell. But sure, I don't see this as something that works constantly. We don't have that ambition. Our ambition is to tell the existing story, as best we can, in a different medium.

Mazin noted that this is how the series was originally shown on HBO. As a game show it takes as many episodes as needed to adapt The last of us And The last of us part two, and that's it. Our approach for future seasons [would be] To say "Well, that's going to be as many seasons as it takes to get to that ending, not more," he added.

Looks like you should prepare yourself for a very loyal version of gaming. But if you want to see a show about the world outside of the games...it doesn't seem to be in the cards. The last of us It will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on January 15th.
