Well, kids, 2022 is now in the rearview mirror, and I have to say, in terms of pop culture entertainment, the year mostly delivered. Certainly, there were quite a number of disappointments - Obi-Wan Kenobi, anyone? —but we also got some real classics in just about every medium.
Without further ado, here are my favorite movies, TV shows, books, CDs, and video games released in 2022.

Avatar: Water Road
It Took 12 Years, But James Cameron Finally Unleashed His Long-awaited Followup to 2009 symbol picture. boy whoa water way It is a stunning cinematic achievement of the first order. While it retains some of the weaker aspects of its predecessor - read: simplistic story, silly dialogue - the visuals and action are leagues better and easily outperform anything to hit cinema this year. Seriously, this is mind-blowing cinema at its best - a visual tour de force with heart-pounding action, tear-jerking drama, and some of the most amazing visual effects you'll ever see. water way It is a movie for the ages and easily my favorite movie of the year. Kudos to composer Simon Franglen for retaining James Horner's signature score while branching out into unexpected new directions.

God of War: Ragnarok
forget Thor: Love and Thunder; The real battle takes place with the Norse gods God of War: Ragnarok, which offers one of the most exciting video game experiences ever. Following the same rhythms as its predecessor while deepening its characters and mythology, Ragnarok is a gritty human drama wrapped into a blockbuster blockbuster full of amazing ensemble cast, powerful dialogue, and visual splendor galore. It is sure to go down as one of the best sequel video games ever.

Heat 2 (audiobook)
I've listened to a lot of audiobooks this year, but none of them were provocative heat 2. Written by Michael Mann and narrated to dramatic perfection by Peter Giles (whose voice makes even the most trivial scenes feel epic), the story picks up where the original 1995 classic took. the heat Let It Go and expands on the characters portrayed by Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Val Kilmer in unique and exciting ways. I was already over the moon about the planned movie, and the audiobook only added to my excitement.

Top Gun: Maverick
Big balls to shoot! Tom Cruise continues to engage audiences with the type of scene that dominated the market in the '80s and early '90s. While Top Gun: Maverick Definitely looking like a contemporary action movie, albeit designed with incredible practical effects, the picture feels like a throwback to simpler times when the need for speed trumped everything else. if something happens, Best Prove that audiences will turn out in droves as long as you show them a good time.

Batman
Dark, moody, and incredibly bleak, Matt Reeves Batman It stands as one of the best mods of our pointy-eared hero to date. The story about the Riddler taking down Gotham's elite might be a clear revolution on David Fincher's Sevenbut the show brings out the look and feel of the Caped Crusader like never before. Batman is a graphic novel brought to life that sets the stage for an exciting new comic universe on the big screen.

Everything everywhere at once
A24 continues to defy expectations with its quirky, albeit highly original, content, all of which is a huge hit. Everything everywhere at once - Possibly the most original big screen motion picture of all time. Featuring brilliant roles from Michelle Yeoh, Ke Hui Quan, and scene-stealing Stephanie Hsu, along with amazing direction from Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, EEAAO It delivers the goods in terms of spectacle (at half the price of your typical Marvel fare) but also offers great commentary on modern family and the eternal struggle between the old and the new. Here we have a delicious piece of cinema that deserves all the credit.

Andor - Season 1
Admittedly, it took me a while to get in Andorra. I enjoyed the first three episodes or so, but chose to wait until the entire series hit Disney+ before diving into Cassian Andor's other adventures. I'm hungry and took the lead because Andorra He is the best star Wars release since then Rogue One - Maybe even The empire strikes. Wisely grounding his actions and characters, showrunner Tony Gilroy avoids the mistakes he made Obi-Wan Kenobi And Boba Fett book Instead, it gives the audience an exciting character study more concerned with political intrigue than with weak actions. So at this point, I say give Gilroy the keys to the kingdom.

House of the Dragon - Season 1
No TV show has caught my eye each week quite like this Dragon house. Dark, captivating, and filled with political intrigue, fascinating characters, and intense violence, the game of thrones Spinoff raises the defunct George R.R. Martin franchise out of the trash. Dragon house It makes dragons and Targaryens relevant again. Sure, the massive time gaps took some getting used to, and there wasn't much payoff for the first season, but count me in for the continued adventures of the crazy Targaryen family.

Northman
Was there ever such a sassy, weird, raw movie? Northman? While certainly not the most original movie ever released, this Robert Eggers production certainly ranks as one of the most ambitious big budget offerings in recent memory and serves as a thrilling (sometimes scary) tale of good revenge. Eggers has spent a great deal of time and money transporting audiences back in time, and the results don't disappoint.

Extended Amistad Score
La La Land Records has spoiled plenty of movie music fans this year with great releases like James Horner's Extended Score field of dreams And Greenwichalong with a reissue of Horner's expanded/complete scores brave heartJerry Goldsmith The 'BurbsDanny Elfman Spider Manand David Arnold Tomorrow never dies.
My favorite of the bunch, however, was the expanded version of Steven Spielberg's largely forgotten John Williams score Amistad. bleaker than your typical Williams album, Amistad It delivers the goods across two and a half hours of beautiful music spread out on two CDs. A must have for soundtrack collectors.

Better Call Saul - Final Season
The final chapter of Better Call Saul Supplied everything I wanted and then some. Aided by stunning performances by Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn, creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould delivered a slow-burn drama that was in equal parts heartbreaking and heartbreaking - a perfect premise and finale. Too bad. Better Call Saul It deserves a mention among the greatest TV shows of all time.

- Lusty - I owe this sumptuous musical production starring Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell. Spin fun Christmas carol.
- Guardian Holiday Special James Jean brings the magic of Christmas with Guardians and Kevin Bacon.
- No Chapter Three flies off the rails, but Jordan Peele's bizarre saga remains must-watch entertainment regardless. I will never buy chimpanzees.
- Ambulance Audiences turned their noses up at Michael Bay's latest action masterpiece, but the pic is a thrilling piece of adrenaline-fueled mayhem.
- X - A24 graphic production perfectly captures the feel of an old school flick. This is how it is done guys.
- All Quiet on the Western Front - Beautiful and touching World War I drama with stunningly realistic battle scenes.
- Accelerates Adam Sandler displays his strong acting chops once again in this entertaining basketball drama that has somehow disappeared since arriving earlier this year.
- Christmas story Christmas Oh man, the holiday offerings have been strong this season. Ralph returns in a worthy follow-up to the 1983 classic.
- Moon Knight - The best thing Marvel has produced this year gets kudos for trying something new and having the common sense to hire Oscar Isaac in dual roles.
