Vic Mensa (and his father) bring clear water home.
Born Victor Kwesi Mensah, Chicago-based rapper and creator, remembers his roots, building on his success and resources to bring a better quality of life to his fellow Ghanaians through access to clean water. Mensa visited his ancestral village on his father's side who was born in Ghana and heads a non-profit called Let Them Drink Water, and witnessed the severe water pollution problem in the community. The couple decided to develop a solution, by building a new well - a hand pump that would provide clean water, but unfortunately scarce throughout Africa. After one successful well that gave access to water to hundreds of thousands, Mensa decided to build two more in nearby villages.
“We are building 3 wells in different communities in Ghana to provide clean drinking water; the first is Asokore Zongo in Koforidua where my family lives, which has already been built. The other sites are a nearby community called Avidwasi and then our ancestral village in the Volta Amedzubi region,” Mensa said in a statement. “Most people in communities like this one in Ghana suffer from water-borne diseases constantly.”

To help fund the wells, which can each cost up to $15,000 to build, Mensa has partnered with the Black Star Line Festival, which takes place in Accra, Ghana, on January 3. 6. The festival will feature performances from Mensa, Chance the Rapper, Erykah Badu, T-Pain, Jeremy & Sarkodie, Toby Nuigwe, Asaka Boys, M. "This festival is about connecting black people in the world," Tell TMJ in an interview. “Beyond all those colonial borders. It's something that's been on my mind for a long time.”
