For some reason film scholars will be put to the test for decades, 2022 was the year of the meta-movie, when everyone seemed to be layering the screen with air quotes. "Everything everywhere at onceIt is recognized as the best, and Nicolas Cage And the Pedro Pascal It was a shout outThe unbearable weight of sheer talent"," But I must also say in that category "Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers" was exceptionally sharp and funny. Props to the book Dan Gregor And the Doug Mand For sly and real insights into the human as well as the chipmunk and the animator's circumstances, and additional props for Disney to allow them some daring chances with some of their iconic characters.
This has also been a year of exceptional biographical films, and it's no surprise that two of them are on my list. These are the films that I chose.
Lebanon sky
Directed by Chloe Mazlo, with Yacine Badday writing this wonderfully illustrated romantic drama, based on the story of her parents. Alice (played by Alba Rohrwatcher, possibly named after the girl who visited Wonderland) is a young woman from Sweden who goes to Lebanon to become a babysitter. She meets a rocket scientist named Joseph (Wajdi Moawad) and fell deeply in love. Mazlo's exceptionally poignant, sensitive, and imaginative imagery gives the film a fairy-tale quality, as if we hear Alice and Joseph tell their story to their daughter many years later. A few happy years pass and Alice becomes close to Joseph's family. But then the civil war broke out. Alice and Joseph try to keep their little world safe and separate, but family members come to live with them, and a dangerous world spills into their lives. Alice loves her home but thinks it is time to move out. Joseph loves his job and wants to stay. This is a sweet love letter from Mazlo to her parents, and one of my favorite movies of the year.
Henry Lawson's 1892 short story Drover's wife is an essential Australian text, the story of a brave and resilient woman living in a remote country cottage in the outback from the late nineteenth century. Writer/Director Leah Purcell He has now remixed the story, giving its central character a name, history, and an inner life. Molly Johnson, who played the director herself, was inspired by her family history. It's particularly impressive that Purcell, who has already told this story both as a novel and as a play, was willing to forego word-based storytelling to make the film effectively rely on visuals to communicate its emotions and details. Likes John Ford And the Howard HawksRealizing the power of landscapes to frame the challenges of individuals struggling with a harsh environment, both physical and cultural. And like all filmmakers, she understands how a close-up of an actor's face can tell more than a page of dialogue.
