Disney + is now available with ads


Disney + The planned ad-supported layer is now available. This new model launches on December 8th. Previously, Disney+ only had one tier, at $7.99 per month, with no ads. If you want to continue watching Disney+ ad-free, the new price for this tier is $10.99 per month.

While it's obvious that increasing the price of a previously available service and charging the old fee for a lower level isn't exactly great for customers, it is an option now. Disney CEO Michael Ball recently made a statement about the new development. He said:

Today's launch marks a milestone for Disney+ and puts consumer choice ahead. With these new ad-supported offerings, we're able to provide greater flexibility for consumers to enjoy the full breadth and depth of The Walt Disney Company's amazing storytelling.

The problem here is that while yes, there are options, the subscriber is forced to pay an additional three dollars per month if they wish to continue using the service as is. If not, they can just stick to the old rate, but are now subject to frequent ad breaks. Not only that, but the ad-supported layer won't have other bells and whistles, like downloads, Groupwatch, or Dolby Atmos support.

Disney was the majority owner of Hulu Since 2019 at least, and it seems they wanted to take a big risk by trying ad-supported models out there first. Rather than shove it on the platform their name appeared on, they chose to take a sneaky approach. When they realized that people would pay more or settle for the ad-supported tier, they expanded the system to other streaming services.

As far as bundles go, Disney offers an ad-supported Hulu/Disney+ bundle for $9.99 per month. For $12.99, you can get Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+. Hulu with Live TV will get you $69.99 per month, which includes Disney+ and ESPN+ in their ad-supported forms.
