The numbers started coming in the first weekend of 2023 and they are very promising. It didn't surprise James Cameron Avatar: Water Road It continues to dominate the market, drawing another $10 million on Friday for what appears to be close to $40 million over the weekend. This would put the film over half a billion marks next to the United States and slash above it The Avengers It became the ninth highest-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office. James Cameron now claims three of the top ten films of all time. I think he really is the king of the world.
However, this weekend's second place shouldn't be counted: the James Wan/Blumhouse production M3GAN that It earned $3 million in Thursday previews, which grossed $11.4 million on Friday on its way to an expected opening weekend of around $27 million. You hear a lot of chatter online (OK, I think you technically read a lot of chatter online) about why they would release a horror movie in January and not in October in the run up to Halloween? Well, here is your answer! January is often seen as a dumping ground when theaters are still packed with holiday blockbuster releases and smaller screens are being tackled by Oscar-winners. Years ago, someone decided that in those months when nothing huge was being released, why not sneak in a few cold-weather chills and since then, for the most part, January has seen some strong numbers for scary movies. (In 2022 we saw Scream Open to over $30 million, in 2019 we've seen escape room amounting to nearly $20 millionAnd While in 2018 Insidious: The Last Key opened at less than $30 million.)
Third place seems to be the animated sequel Puss in Boots: Last Wish With a Friday of $2.5 million and a weekend grossing expected of $10 million and just under $90 million. Not bad numbers for Antonio Banderas voicing the Cats, but it looks like it's going to finish a run off its original $149.2 million domestic buy. With the studio firmly holding on to the short theatrical window, puss in boots 2 It's available to watch in your home now, so I'm wondering how that will affect the box office in the coming weeks.
Fourth place belongs to Tom Hanks with A man called Otto It brought in $1.2 million on Friday with an expected weekend of around $3.5 million. Those are very strong numbers for a movie that's playing in about 600 theaters. Like I said in my original predictionsThere are still some names that will be put ass in the seats and Tom Hanks is one of those! However, the big story of this story is actually the huge divide between critics and fans. While critics were midway through this remake of the Oscar-nominated Swedish film A man called Oof (The film currently has a rating of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes along with our special Chris Bombray gave it 5/10 in his review,) The audience seems to be really enjoying it, giving Otto and a solid audience rate of 97%.
Rounding out the top five is the continued success Black Panther: Wakanda Forever which has been going strong since early November, and is looking to add another $3 million to the box office this weekend.
