YellowstoneSeason 5 begins right when John Dutton (Kevin Costner) learns that he has won the election to governor of Montana. From that moment on, the premiere slowly reveals the character's standing for this season's chess match. How would Thomas Rainwater (Gill Birmingham) react to the possibility that the now-planned airport and hotel would be impossible with Dutton at the Governor's Palace? How will Market Equities CEO Caroline Warner (Jackie Weaver) respond with the most powerful family in the state now in control of the future of their financial interests? More importantly, how will Jimmy's father's death bring him closer or away from Pete (Kelly Riley), his father, and the rest of the Dutton clan?
Rather than answering any of these questions directly, Taylor Sheridan instead takes his time and focuses on John's inauguration and celebration to become governor and evokes the overall direction that the rest of the season will take. It's an interesting choice given Yellowstone's history of putting drama front and center in front of the audience. This more nuanced approach doesn't mean that the series has lost any of its parts since there are many intense sequences in this first episode of the two-hour premiere, but it's offset by flashbacks of Rip and Beth's youthful days as young adults as well as time spent in the Bunkhouse with patrons. Everyone's favorite cows and cowboys. There is also time spent with Kayce (Luke Grimes) as he continues his role as Livestock Commissioner and awaits the birth of his second child with Monica (Kelsey Asbille).

The highlight of this season Yellowstone Compared to the previous four is the difference in plot. While only the premiere has been made available for this review, there's certainly a lot going for it to start Season 5, but not as urgent as we've seen before. In many ways, what happens in this episode negates much of what has challenged the Dutton family and their farm to a point that effectively resets the game's clock. This is dangerous because all of these characters now have huge targets on their backs and any skeletons in their vaults or buried bodies (and we know there are a lot of them) can come back to haunt them and jeopardize whatever control they have. This is the first season in which John Dutton appears to be out of his element since he started facing his own death again in season one. It's also the first time since this series started that I don't quite know where Yellowstone He will then go.
Taylor Sheridan continues to write every episode Yellowstone, something he did for the entire series outside of season two (not coincidentally also the weakest season in the entire series). The directing duties in the first episode fall to Stephen Kay, a regular actor on the show since 2019. Future episodes this year will be directed by Christina Foros, who is also a veteran since season two. This means the optical caliber of Yellowstone It is still top notch and continues to make amazing use of the Montana skyline. The majesty of Montana remains a breathtaking reminder of what John Dutton is trying to protect and also upholds his steadfast political promises as governor, but it could also be a losing battle. Taylor Sheridan clearly knows where this story is headed and it's hard not to feel that this season could be a turning point in the Duttons saga.
The opening of the fifth season of Yellowstone It might not be nail-biting or as shocking as the first few shows, but that doesn't mean there aren't some twists your way. make no mistake, Yellowstone It's still safe for anyone, not even the main characters we care about on a weekly basis. I'm thankful that this story is still in the traditional weekly release format rather than declining the season further. Through the excitement of each episode, even chapters that don't include shocking discoveries become a point of view. I hope Paramount chose to start with just one episode this season so we can spend another week watching the Duttons protect their families and their land. But I'm also happy to get that much Yellowstone as much as I can. No fans will be disappointed with this premiere as Taylor Sheridan's family drama continues to be one of the most popular series on TV.
