Come on, this is the best store-bought egg brand

Eggnog is an interesting food item. When you ask if Someone loves eggnog, the question generally results in one of two extreme reactions: one for love and one for disgust. We didn't drink eggnog in my house. Looking back, my only experience with it was seeing punchbowls filled to the brim Christmas movies And someone always adds a splash or two of bourbon. And because the idea of making an egg-based drink myself gives me pause, I always turn to my trusty store-bought carton.

So, of course, it felt like the perfect opportunity for this year tasting holiday. That's right—we find out once and for all which store-bought brand makes the best eggnog. And if you're not an eggnog fan yourself, don't worry — there are plenty of other uses for its creamy goodness. In fact, I was so inspired that I used Winner as a milk substitute in my Thanksgiving pumpkin pie. (Rumor has it, it was Better A pie I made years ago.)

Taste-Off: The best Eggnog brand

In our search for the best eggnog, we've tried everything. The almond- and oat-based versions are thick, creamy, dairy-free, and, of course, the classics. And when it came to the end of our tastings, one brand emerged as the clear winner.

So keep reading for the best store-bought eggnog we could find at the grocery store — plus the eggs we'll keep in the fridge for the holidays!

Ranking Guidelines

When I think of eggnog, my immediate description is that it's like drinking melted ice cream. It's sweet, with a subtle spice flavor that seems to infuse the milk with spice rather than being overly spicy. We were looking for a sweet but not too sweet syrupy drink that had the flavor of complementary spices. This can be offset by the sharpness of adding bourbon. (None of the store-bought eggnog had alcohol in the ingredient list.)

texture. The consistency should be thick, creamy, and custard-like. Some people say that when you drink it, it should cover your throat. (Appetizing, right?) Regardless, the texture we were looking for from the store-bought versions was thick, not extra watery and creamy.

Not the greats

It felt a bit impossible to arrange all the eggnog we bought in numerical order. There were a few things we didn't really like that we couldn't rank against each other in a seemingly objective way.

Those that fell to the bottom of our rankings (in no particular order):

Trader Joe's Regular Eggnog and Oat Nog

While we consider ourselves Trader Joe's positionThey had a watery texture. The oatmeal version lacked any noticeable flavor and the regular version tasted almost artificial with vanilla.

Select HEB Eggnog Plug

This eggnog, despite its very thick consistency, was "like an air freshener in the mouth," though some said it could easily be cured with a healthy splash of bourbon.

Rich Kroger Brand and Creamy Eggnog

Our tasters described the Kroger syrup as "cinnamon milk". He said enough.

Eggnog Special Selection

This consistency was very thick and had an artificial whiskey flavor to it.

Chobani Oatmilk Oat Nog

Chobani Oat Nog tasted a lot like spice without any spices in the ingredient list. In general, this was it pass, pass, pass of our taste.

Middleground

When it comes to eggnog that's rated "drinkable" but not a fan favorite, Lactaid eggnog And the Almond Breeze came in the middle. It wasn't too thick in texture, and the flavors were flatter than the winners. But if these were the only option in the store, we wouldn't necessarily miss it.

3. The Simple Truth Eggnog. We were surprised by this sleeper hit. The Private Label Simple Truth Eggnog was my dad's favorite. It was heavier in nutmeg flavor, while also being quite thick in texture. Some tasters think this taste is a bit artificial, but not enough to diminish it. In general, a good option.

2. 1836 Texas Farmer Forever Eggnog. A more regional and seasonal flavor than an 1836 farmer's, this was my favorite eggnog. The texture was nicely thick without being greasy. It didn't taste artificial in any way and felt like one of the more savoury-drinking options out there. We'll have this on hand for this season.

1. Southern Comfort Traditional Eggnog. And our favorite eggnog buy winner comes from Southern Comfort. This eggnog had a pronounced spice flavor that was warm and delicious and a thick, creamy texture worthy of comparison to melted ice cream. If you're not going to make eggnog from scratch, this is a great option to have on hand.
