Blending the flavors of fresh apples, maple syrup, and cinnamon, this homemade apple butter recipe is a symphony of fall flavors! While it's not technically "butter" as its name suggests (similar to Pumpkin butter), apple butter has a richer, creamier texture than you would expect from a fruit preserve.

While many apple butter recipes call for an all-day process that involves a large slow cooker and exactly 6 pounds of apples, we wanted to develop a recipe that was more accessible. If you're looking for a fun and very manageable cooking project that will make a jar or two of homemade apple butter, this recipe is for you!
So grab a decent amount and a handful of apples, and let's make apple butter!
Ingredients
An apple: Whatever apples are available in your area will work with this recipe. We really like using Pink Ladies because they have a nice balance of sweet and tart notes that really show up in butter.
Sweeteners: We use a combination of white sugar And the Maple syrup This sweetener. White sugar does not have a unique flavor but caramelizes well, giving apple butter its distinctive color. The maple syrup is not too caramelized but does provide a unique flavour. So we use both. Honey or agave would be good substitutes for maple syrup.
Apple juice or apple juice: You need quite a bit of liquid to puree the apples properly. So instead of watering the mixture with water, it is better to use apple juice or Apple juice. It is only apple flavored water.
Apple cider vinegar: Using apple cider vinegar will really lighten the apple butter. You need a little acidity to fully savor all the other flavors. You can also use an equal amount of lemon juice as an alternative.
cinnamon: Years of societal conditioning have intrinsically linked the flavor of apples and cinnamon to our brains. Without the cinnamon, it doesn't taste like an apple.
How to make apple butter

Peel and chop the apple
The first step is to core the apple to remove the seeds. Unfortunately, the seeds won't disintegrate in a blender, so they'll have to pop out.
On the other hand, peeling apples is a somewhat optional step. Removing the skin from the apples will give you a smoother, more lustrous consistency in the final product. But you can also leave the skins on, too. The final product will have a bit more texture.
Mix the ingredients
After preparing the apples, it's time to add all of the ingredients into a high-powered blender. We used a Vitamix, which had more than enough capacity. You can also use a large food processor.
Blend all ingredients until completely smooth. This may take a minute or two. After you're done blending, it should look like really loose apple juice.
Cook apples
To cook the apple puree down, we suggest using a large saucepan with high sides. Something much bigger than what you actually need. The reason is that as the apple puree reduces, it will start to bubble and splatter. A high-sided pan will help contain most apple cider lava and keep your stove top clean.
Transfer the apple puree to the large saucepan and place over medium heat until it starts to boil. Once bubbles begin to form, reduce the heat and slowly simmer. From here, it will take about 45 minutes to an hour to cut. You'll want to whisk the mixture occasionally to keep it mobile, but you don't need to swirl it on top.
If the splatter becomes too intense, you can reduce the heat. In addition, you can use a mesh splash guard.
You'll know the apple butter is ready when it maintains consistent streaks when you run the whisk through it. Turn off the fire and leave it to cool.

How to store homemade apple butter
The best way to store apple butter is to transfer it to a glass container with a sealable lid, such as a mason jar, and store it in the refrigerator. Or, if you're camping, in your cooler. The apple butter will set more when cooled and give it a more spreadable texture.
If kept properly refrigerated, apple butter should last for about two weeks.

Use warm immediately, or transfer the apple butter to a pint mason jar and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.
